Did the Vikings use birds to help them navigate? The Vikings did used birds, because if they saw birds flying in the distance they knew they were near land because birds don’t fly far from land. They would also use ravens, if they were lost they would let the raven go, and the raven would probably be hungry and fly to land in search of food, then the vikings would follow it.
